 महाभारत का युद्ध निश्चित हो गया था दोनों पक्ष अपने-अपने सहायकों को एकत्र करने में लग गए थे इसी क्रम में एक दिन दुर्योधन भगवान श्री कृष्ण के पास युद्ध में सहायता मांगने हेतु पहुंचे .

 श्री कृष्ण उस समय विश्राम कर रहे थे. दुर्योधन उनकी सैया के सिरहाने बैठ गए. तभी अर्जुन भी इसी उद्देश्य से श्री कृष्ण के पास पहुंचे. वह उन्हें सोया हुआ देखकर उनके चरणों के पास खड़े हो गए.

जागने पर श्री कृष्ण ने अपने सम्मुख अर्जुन को देखा और उनके आने का उद्देश्य पूछा. दुर्योधन तुरंत बोले - ‘  वासुदेव! पहले मैं आया हूं .’ 

तब जनार्दन ने पीछे देख कर प्रयोजन से आने का कारण पूछा. दुर्योधन ने और फिर अर्जुन ने दोनों ने अपने आने का उद्देश्य श्रीकृष्ण को बताया.

इस पर श्री कृष्ण बोले-’  मैं इस युद्ध में शस्त्र नहीं उठाऊंगा. एक   तरफ  मैं शस्त्र वहीं रहूंगा और दूसरी ओर मेरी सेना रहेगी .’ 

 अर्जुन ने  निशस्त्र श्री कृष्ण को और दुर्योधन ने सेना को चुना .  दुर्योधन प्रसन्न होकर चले गए. जब श्री कृष्ण ने अर्जुन से पूछा - ‘  तुमने मुझको क्यों चुना ?  क्यों नहीं ली ?’ .

 तब अर्जुन बोले - ‘  हमारी जय हो या ना हो,  हम आपको छोड़कर नहीं रह सकते.’

 वासुदेव ने हंसकर पूछा - ‘  मुझसे क्या करोगे’ 

 अर्जुन ने हंसते हुए कहा-’   आप मेरे रथ की डोर हाथ में लीजिए और मुझे निश्चित कर दीजिए .’
